If you’re still training like goalies did 10 years ago…
You’re already behind.
The game has changed. Shooters are faster, more accurate, and more unpredictable than ever. And that means goalie technique has had to evolve.
The Old School Approach
Traditional goalie training focused on:
- A narrow stance (shoulder-width)
- Toes pointing forward
- A perfectly vertical stick
- Stepping at 45-degree angles
At the time, this worked.
But the game wasn’t moving at today’s speed.
The Modern Standard
Today’s elite goalies look completely different.
You’ll see:
- A wider stance
- Toes slightly angled outward
- A stick held at a slight angle (not perfectly vertical)
- More efficient, lateral movement
Why?
Because the goal isn’t just to react faster.
The goal is to make the save easier.
The Shift to Lateral Movement
One of the biggest changes is how goalies move.
Instead of stepping diagonally, modern goalies move laterally — directly toward the ball’s path.
This does two things:
- It shortens the movement path
- It gives you more time to react
And in a position where milliseconds matter… that’s everything.
The Big Mistake Most Goalies Make
They train like it’s still 2015.
They copy outdated techniques, then wonder why they struggle against modern shooters.
The truth is:
If your technique hasn’t evolved, your performance won’t either.
Final Thought
Modern goalie training isn’t about doing more.
It’s about doing the right things.
Better positioning.
Better movement.
Better decision-making.
