The Off-Hand Debate: Should You Learn Both?

Do you actually need to train your off-hand as a goalie?

Short answer:

Yes… but not for the reason you think.

Why It Matters

Training your off-hand improves:

  • Coordination
  • Brain function
  • Hand-eye connection

It forces your brain to adapt, and that carries over to your dominant side.

The Reality

Here’s the truth:

You’re not going to use your off-hand much in games.

So if you’re older, your priorities should be:

  • Saving the ball
  • Clearing effectively
  • Leadership

When It Matters Most

If you’re a younger goalie:

This is the perfect time to develop it.

The earlier you build coordination, the easier it becomes.

The Right Way to Use It

Don’t treat it like a game skill.

Treat it like a training tool.

Get on the wall.
Work both hands.
Develop feel and control.

Final

Off-hand training isn’t essential…

But it’s one of the best ways to accelerate your development as a younger and/or newer goalie.
