Reviewing your own film is one of the most critical steps in accelerating your development as a goalie. However, simply watching your game tape isn’t enough, you need to know exactly what you are looking for. To maximize your film study, we recommend separating your clips into four distinct categories.
The Four Categories of Film Review
When analyzing your performance, focus your review on these four areas:
- Saves: When reviewing successful saves, make a note of why the save was made. Ask yourself if it was a result of a lucky bounce or if it was the result of a specific, repeatable technique you executed correctly.
- Goals: When reviewing goals, do not just look at the result. Look at what went wrong and identify what you could have done better. Alternatively, if you performed a perfect save technique and the shooter just made a great shot, that is important to recognize as well.
- Successful Clears: Examine your technique, specifically focusing on throwing mechanics like getting your hands up and back, as well as your decision-making.
- Failed Clears: Analyze these closely to determine if you made poor decisions, such as rushing into a clear and putting your teammate in a difficult position, or if you threw a “hospital pass” that left them vulnerable.
By taking the time to categorize your film this way, you can build a more accurate picture of your strengths and weaknesses, regardless of the final score of the game. This process is purely about personal growth, not just counting stats for the team.
